Course Description:
This full-day course introduces new and novice shooters to the fundamentals of rifle marksmanship, safety, and operation using modern AR-15-style carbines. Whether you’re completely new to shooting or transitioning from handguns to rifles, this course is designed to build confidence, knowledge, and safe handling habits.
The curriculum focuses on safety-first, followed by a progressive, hands-on learning experience covering the mechanical function of the AR-15 platform, basic manipulations, and fundamental shooting techniques. Students will gain a working understanding of how to safely operate, maintain, and shoot their rifle with confidence and control.
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Apply the four fundamental rules of firearm safety
- Identify and understand key components of the AR-15 rifle
- Load, unload, and clear malfunctions safely
- Understand and apply rifle shooting fundamentals: stance, grip, sight alignment, trigger control, and follow-through
- Engage targets from standing, kneeling, and supported positions
- Maintain a rifle with basic field-stripping and cleaning knowledge
No prior experience is required. This is an ideal starting point for responsible civilians, new gun owners, or individuals pursuing rifle training.
Required Gear (Student-Supplied or Rental Available):
Essential:
- AR-15 or AKM style rifle (5.56/.223 preferred; other calibers acceptable with prior approval)
- 2–3 magazines (minimum 60 rounds total capacity)
- 250-300 rounds of ammunition MINIMUM
- Sling (two-point sling recommended)
- Eye protection (ANSI-rated)
- Ear protection (electronic preferred)
- Closed-toe shoes and range-appropriate clothing
- Water and snacks
- Notebook and pen
Optional / Recommended:
- Hat with brim
- Gloves
- Magazine pouch or Carrier
- Sunscreen and bug spray (for outdoor use)
- Basic cleaning kit (for post-class maintenance overview)
